‘Dubai Can’ Initiative to create a Big Impact with One Small Change

February 22, 2022

With the omnipresence of plastic in our daily lives from carry bags to water bottles, we have reached a tipping point where trash is not only polluting the earth but also jeopardizing marine life.

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, launched ‘Dubai Can’, a citywide movement to inspire people to make a difference through a series of sustainability-focused initiatives. It encourages residents to take mass action to largely reduce the use of single-use plastic bottles. The incredible idea will lead to a vibrant green economy and turn into a unique sustainable development model for the world to follow. The plan is aligned with the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai to transform the emirate into a green city and the best destination to live.

Some concerning facts highlighted by the Government of Dubai Media Office are:

  • A resident uses 450 plastic water bottles on average annually, which translates into 4 billion plastic bottles in the UAE.
  • Plastic bottles take 500 years to decompose and plastic straws take 200 years to decompose, posing hazards to the environment.
  • Plastic waste is responsible for the deaths of 1.1 million marine creatures globally. Sadly, by 2050 there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.

We need to act now to rescue our planet before it’s too late. Dubai Can is a timely move that will:

  • Bolster a citywide movement towards positive change.
  • Protect the environment by reducing plastic waste and saving wildlife.
  • Create a culture of conscious living by driving awareness on plastic alternatives and sustainability measures.

Dubai Can urges communities to undertake simple changes such as refilling water bottles at conveniently set-up public water stations and installing water filters in their living spaces. While adopting these sensible measures, the government has devised full-fledged plans of a sustainable infrastructure to address the wider plastic pollution menace.

Here are simple measures that one can practice for a sustainable future:

Public water drinking stations

Dubai residents and visitors will have access to safe drinking water in 30 plus water stations across the city in prime locations including beaches, parks, malls and major attractions. More stations are expected to be installed in the future. The chill water offers people a refreshing and hygienic alternative to quench their thirst, whilst orienting them towards a ‘refill culture’. These refill taps use filters to provide water as good as branded water bottles. This in turn cuts down pollution by encouraging individuals to avoid buying packaged water.

Safe tap water

Drinking tap water in the UAE is safer than plastic water bottles as the water goes through a desalination process before reaching the taps. Dubai Can initiative encourages residents to abandon plastic bottles for refillable ones. Officials urge people to install filters at home to ensure the water is not affected by aging pipes/tanks.

Tariff on plastic bags

A 25 fils tariff will be introduced for single-use plastic carry bags from July 1, 2022 and it will be applied in retail outlets, supermarkets, restaurants and pharmacies, as well e-commerce delivery orders. The charge will be evaluated in stages until plastic bags are completely banned in two years’ time.

How can you make a difference?

Everyone can contribute to the environmental welfare cause through their actions and here’s simple ways to initiate change:

  • Carry refillable water containers and persuade family and friends to do the same.
  • Circulate information about the free drinking water stations around the city and encourage their use.
  • Install water filters in your home, offices and schools and other living spaces.
  • Practice sustainable living and inspire the community with your actions and choices.

With Dubai 2040 Urban Masterplan set to increase the area of public beaches by 400 percent and nature areas to be boosted to 60 percent, the Dubai Can initiative lays the groundwork for sustainable communities for generations to come.

Together ‘Dubai Can’- Let’s join together to make sustainability a way of life. It’s time for all of us to do out a bit now.
