Dubai to transform into a bicycle-friendly city

August 27, 2020

In line with Dubai Vision 2021, Dubai introduces plans to promote cycling as a sport and a means of eco-friendly transport.

Dubai authorities will introduce new laws to ensure the safety of cyclists traveling throughout the city. The new initiative intends to meet the objectives of the Dubai Traffic Strategy 2021, aiming to reduce road fatalities, the UAE Energy Strategy 2050 is aiming to reduce Dubai’s carbon emissions by 16 percent by 2021 and the goal of Dubai to have world’s lowest carbon footprint.

Whether you are a hardcore cycling enthusiast or just love to ride for leisure, the UAE’s cycling community is bustling. Applause to the forthcoming plans from Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Residents can look ahead to enhanced awareness of bicycle use, better security measures, standards and policies, dedicated zones for bicycles and rent-a-bicycle options for the bicycle riders.

“His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, is the greatest inspiration for us in encouraging the use of bicycles into people’s lifestyles. A few days ago, we all saw His Highness riding a bike in Dubai,” said Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police Lt. General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri.

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) introduced the pay-as-you-ride Careem bicycles earlier this year.
